Luke Beattie and Lily Beattie win pole vault state titles

Warwick Valley’s Luke Beattie and his sister Lily Beattie both won state titles in the pole vault at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island on March 2.

Luke and Lily followed in the footsteps of their father, Rich Beattie, who won the indoor track and field state championship in the pole vault for Warwick in 1986.

Luke Beattie, a sophomore, cleared 16 feet on his first attempt to win the boys event. He also won the pole vault last spring at the outdoor state championship meet.

Lily Beattie won the gold medal in the girls pole vault by clearing 13 feet. Warwick junior Rachel Venter finished fourth (11-6).

At the NYSPHSAA Swimming and Diving Championships, Warwick seventh-grader Drew Voloshin finished fifth with an 11-dive score of 428.10. His father Greg Voloshin won a state title in diving for Warwick in 1997.

Warwick’s girls and boys basketball team saw their successful seasons end in the Section 9 Class AA championship games at Monroe-Woodbury on March 2.

Our Lady of Lourdes defeated Warwick 42-40 in the boys game. The Wildcats advanced to the finals by defeating Washingtonville 38-37. The team ended the season with a record of 15-6.

In the girls game, Wallkill beat Warwick 50-39 to win its third straight Section 9 title. Warwick (14-6) defeated Cornwall 48-24 in the semifinals.


Warwick Valley athletic director Greg Sirico was honored with the Don Santini Service Award at the New York State High School Football Coaches Association awards banquet at Turning Stone Casino on March 1.

Santini is best known as the athletic director and football coach at Fairport High School. He is a past executive director of the NYSHSFCA.
