Hurry… help the Park Ave student council celebrate vets this season!
The Park Avenue Student Council has been busy preparing for two of their biggest annual events of the year, Wreaths Across America and Trees for Heroes. Both programs solemnly recognize and duly celebrate the sacrifices made by our nation’s many military veterans, and the student council is asking for your help!
Student council members have been busy collecting money for this year’s Wreaths Across America effort. The money they raise goes directly toward buying the wreaths that the students will then lie at the graves of veterans in on Wreaths Across America Day in December. With Veterans Day coming right up, the student council is asking community members to consider paying their respect for our veterans by helping them reach their goal of $2,500!
“We have until November 6 to collect all of the money that we will use to purchase the wreaths,” said student senate advisor Amy Buliung. “The students have been working hard, and with such enthusiasm for this project, creating flyers, asking family and friends for donations — they are just so excited to help celebrate this Veterans Day as a school.”
Student Council President Sabina Fasano said that she chose to get involved with student council as a way to part of “a group that just goes around helping.”
“Student council helps our class, and it helps the school and the community,” said Sabina. “What we’re doing now, is we want people to appreciate the veterans and what they do. So, we’re doing all of this work for Wreaths Across America, and we’re working on getting donations to buy the wreaths.”
Wreaths Across America is a national program that Remembers, Honors and Teaches everyone about the role veterans have played in our lives and history. Wreath-laying ceremonies are coordinated at more that 2,500 locations across 50 states, abroad, and even at sea. The Park Avenue student council will be participating in the Wreaths Across America Day in Goshen, on Saturday December 16. helping to lay wreaths and honor those who sacrificed so much for us.
“It’s kind of like carrying on a tradition for the school,” said Student Council Media Outreach Coordinator James Chavez. “I wanted to get involved with student council because it’s a great chance to help people, and to work together with the people in my class.”
The student council is also participating in Trees of Heroes program. They have been collecting pictures of veterans who are no longer with us, and will be creating ornaments for each one of them. The ornaments will be used to decorate trees at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Goshen in December.
