WVHS Wildcats win Section IX Class AA Boys Soccer Championship
The WVHS Wildcats boys varsity soccer team put together quite a weekend, capping off what can only be described as “quite a season.”
The boys took their stellar 15-1-1 record and #1 ranking into play last week and won their Section IX semifinal match. That win set them up for the title game against Newburgh Free Academy (#3) on Saturday, October 30.
The Wildcats posted a 2-0 win to earn the Section IX Class AA Boys Soccer Championship, bringing the title back to Warwick for the first time in five years.
“I couldn’t be more proud of these boys. The season that they have put together is incredible, and a result of the hard work and focus that they put in,” said Coach Denis O’Connor, also sharing that former Wildcats varsity coach John VanPelt has been assisting. “It’s been like having a master coach around all the time. Coach VanPelt was a huge help to us.”
Warwick’s defense, which has stymied opponents all season long, was at it again on Saturday, as the team recorded its eleventh shut-out of 2021. Wildcats goalie Aiden Razukiewicz made four saves. Scoring was led by Joe Holder and Jacob McGowan.
“This Wildcats team has brought a combination of timely scoring and tremendous defense to the pitch game after game this year,” said Coach O’Connor. “And that’s been the winning formula for such a great year.”
The Wildcats are now gearing up for a regional game versus Section I champs Mamaroneck on November 3 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be played at Hendrick Hudson High School in Montrose, New York.
Congratulations, Wildcats, and good luck on Wednesday!
