WVHS students welcome PIE students to hands-on STEM Museum

June 6, 2024

Students from the Sanfordville PIE 3 & 4 classes visited a “STEM Museum” set up in the WVHS library on Wednesday. The museum was created (and curated) by students in WVHS math teacher Lisa Howard’s AP Calculus class.

“My AP Calculus BC class took their AP exam on Monday, May 13,” said Ms. Howard. “It’s an extremely difficult exam covering material in Calc 1 and Calc 2, both of which are challenging college courses. After taking a few days to unwind and celebrate having finished, we started working on our end-of-year project: designing and putting together a STEM museum for the Sanfordville PIE 3rd/4th grade classes.”

The high school students spent two weeks brainstorming possible museum subjects in small groups, then picking a single topic and creating a plan for an engaging presentation/activity for the elementary students. The high schoolers developed topic-specific, hands-on learning stations for each.

The Sanfordville students proceeded to tour the museum, spending about 10 minutes at each of six stations. At each station, the high school students explained the science behind the topic, and then led the younger students through a fun, related activity. They included…

  • The Calculus Behind Roller Coasters
  • Making Slime
  • Magnet Maze
  • Lava Lamps
  • DNA-Modeled Bead Bracelets
  • Buoyancy & Boats

A very special thank you to the WVHS Student Senate, for generously purchasing the supplies that went into making this event so successful and memorable!
