WVHS OCAL team takes on faculty team in inaugural WVHS Academic Challenge

April 11, 2024
On Wednesday, the WVHS Orange County Academic League (OCAL) Team, took on a team of WVHS faculty in the inaugural WVHS Academic Challenge! It was a spirited showdown of smarts, during which the two teams competed for the right to claim “who knows the most.”

OCAL provides high schools in Orange County with opportunities to compete in “quiz bowl” style events. Team rosters often include students who specialize in certain subject matter, while overall collaboration and knowledge sharing is also key to success. OCAL questions can cover anything — literature, history, science, mathematics, art, music and even current events. The competitions utilize a buzzer lockout system, and answers must be provided immediately following a team buzzing in.

Wednesday’s event was moderated by WVHS English teacher (and host of School Talk) Nick DiLeo. The competition was broken up into two rounds, and each round was either 45 questions or 15 minutes long — whichever came first.

The student team included Conrad Wendell, Josh Cornelius, Chloe Jarrous, Astrid Kelly, Grace Cornelius and Anthony Apuzzo. The faculty team included Mr. Mark, Mr. Warren, Ms. Persad, Mrs. Glover, Ms. Howard, Ms. Trovato, Mr. O’Connor, Mr. Ramjattan and Mr. Arteaga. In a nail-biter, the faculty team narrowly edged out the OCAL team by a score of 37-34!
