Warwick Wildcats continue their success in post-season competition

The Warwick Wildcats continued their success in post-season competitions, led by a record-setting performance by senior Lily Beattie at the Section 9 state qualifying track and field meet.

Beattie set a new school record and qualified for the state championship meet in the pole vault with a jump of 13 feet, seven inches on Feb. 17 at the Armory.

Rachel Venter finished third (11-0) and also qualified for the state meet, which will be held on Saturday, March 2, at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island.

Top two individual finishers and winning relay advance to state championships, as do third-place finishers and runner-up relays that meet a state-meet standard.

Warwick’s girls 800-meter relay team of Hannah Cann, Reagan Smith, Erin Smith, and Beattie set a new school record with a time of 1:46.47 at the Section 9 state qualifier.

In the boys meet, sophomore Luke Beattie qualified for the state meet in two events. He won the pole vault (15-0) and finished second in the 55-meter dash (6.60).

Sophomore Klaus Lindenau will also be competing at the state meet after finished third (13-0) in the pole vault.

Warwick girls’ ski team, with four Wildcats in the top 10, finished second at the Section 9 championships at Hunter Mountain on Feb. 14. Three Wildcats qualified for the state meet at Whiteface Mountain: Hallie Hansen (third place), Ava Fanos (fifth) and Natalie Proulx finished (seventh).

In the boys competition, Logan Rivelli finished sixth.

Warwick’s divers, led by seventh-grader Drew Voloshin’s third-place finish, were the top scoring team at the Section 9 Boys Swimming and Diving championship meet at Valley Central High School.

Voloshin took third with an 11-dive score of 515.80. He qualified for the state meet and became the first Section 9 middle schooler to break 500 points.

Also placing in the top 10 for the Wildcats were:  Lucas Langone (sixth), Lucas Wensley (seventh), Mac Tomlinson (eighth), Rory Wright (ninth) and Danyal Hafeez (tenth).

In the swimming portion of the meet, Connor Holland finished third in the 100-yard backstroke (53.67) and fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:48.12). Michael Kelly was fourth in the 100 freestyle (48.52).

The Warwick girls and boys basketball teams will both be playing in the Section 9 semifinals at home on Thursday, Feb. 29.

The top-seeded Warwick girls play No. 4 seed Cornwall at 5 p.m. The second-seeded Warwick boys play No. 3 seed Washingtonville at 6:30 p.m. The championship games are scheduled for Saturday at Monroe-Woodbury High School, with the boys playing at 2 p.m. and the girls game at 4 p.m.
