Warwick Valley High School Youth in Government students meet with state representatives in Albany

February 28, 2024

The WVHS Youth in Government Program joined librarians from the Ramapo Catskill Library System for New York Library Association’s annual Library Lobby Day at the State Capitol in Albany, N.Y., on Feb. 7, 2024. Members of the program, joined by advisor Mr. Kevan Ottochian and chaperones Mr. Scott Meyer and Mr. Jereme Safier, rallied with librarians to secure funding for libraries and other educational endeavors.

The Youth in Government team met with Assemblyman Karl Brabenec, Assemblyman Brian Maher along with Senator James Skoufis to discuss the budget process and how it affects library funding. Not only did students’ advocate for libraries, but also the state legislators shared new initiatives to expand the library’s community outreach as possible future collaborations with the Youth in Government Program.

Since the early 2000s under then advisor Mr. Scott Meyer, the lobbying trip continues to be monumental for providing members the opportunity to participate in democracy and forge a positive impact on our community. The WVHS Youth in Government Program looks forward to continuing to advocate for libraries.

Advisor Ottochian repeated that the WVHS Youth in Government Program remains committed and dedicated to its efforts to nurture life-long learners and leaders due to the ongoing support from the WVHS administration, Board of Education and district administration.
