Update: Energy Facility Fire, WVCSD Closure
The battery storage system fire on County Rt 1, behind the WVCSD Transportation Garage is contained within the facility’s fence line and is being actively monitored by the Warwick Fire District.
Warwick and Orange County Emergency Services have been present and, along with the project owner and the equipment manufacturer, have been monitoring the situation throughout the day on June 27. It is likely that the fire will continue through the morning of June 28.
We are following the industry’s best practice of maintaining a safe distance and letting combustible material deteriorate. It is not recommended to use water to suppress a battery storage fire.
As a precaution, WVCSD has decided to close all schools, outdoor venues, and offices on June 27 28.
HAZMAT conducted air quality testing that showed an air quality index within non-alarming levels. Although there is no present cause for concern regarding the air quality, it is advisable to keep a distance and close windows if you are within the vicinity. Testing of the air quality will continue over the next few days.
No injuries have been reported in connection with the fire and safety remains the priority.
We expect to issue periodic updates starting at 10:00 am on June 28.
