Sanfordville classes host 3rd Annual Friendsgiving event
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, four classes at Sanfordville Elementary School collaborated on Thursday, November 21 to host a Friendsgiving Luncheon for an esteemed guest list. Teachers Carla Overbey, Erin Clark, Brendan Bauer and Jessica Kirwan led the students through a day of learning that surely sounds familiar to anyone who’s ever prepared a holiday meal — they did a morning full of preparation and an afternoon of serving, hosting and enjoying their guests’ company!

In the morning, the students worked in groups to decorate their gathering space with orange tablecloths and autumnal centerpieces. But more importantly, they got to work on their Friendsgiving menu of seasonal and holiday staples!
During prep time, the students made fresh mashed potatoes and green bean casserole. They also organized their serving station, which included turkey breast, spiral ham, cornbread, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and homestyle dinner rolls. In putting the menu and service station together, the students applied previously learned and new skills, following recipes, making precise measurements, and maintaining a safe and clean cooking environment.
Once the buffet was ready and waiting, the students got a lesson on the communication skills and techniques needed to properly greet and seat their guests, and then serve them. The newly trained wait staff did an exemplary job making their guests feel welcome, giving each table a complete run-down of the menu options, taking their orders and expediting table service.

A few of the grateful guests included Sanfordville administration — principal Johnna Maraia and associate principal Timothy Ferraro — School Resource Officer Katie, a number of SES faculty, and some family members who were able to make the weekday visit. The students were proud to share their culinary creations, as well as some of what they’ve learned about the historical significance of Thanksgiving and its traditions.
The afternoon wrapped up with a dessert selection of apple and pumpkin pies, or Thanksgiving cupcakes.
The students, along with Ms. Overbey and Ms. Clark, share their gratitude for everyone who lent a hand, a dish, or simply the warmth of their company to this year’s Friendsgiving.
Happy Thanksgiving!
