WVHS teacher receives Exceptional Mentor award from SUNY

May 12, 2023

Join us in congratulating WVHS Criminal Justice teacher Eduardo Avila, who received the Exceptional Mentor Award from SUNY Albany College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security & Cybersecurity (CEHC).

The Exceptional Mentor Award recognizes a high school teacher, counselor, or administrator who is “…committed to igniting and cultivating a passion for students interested in pursuing careers in information sciences/technology, cybersecurity, and/or emergency management/homeland security.”

Since working to establish Warwick Valley’s relationship with CEHC, Mr. Avila has arranged both in-person and remote visits between college professors and his students in the WVHS Criminal Justice program. A number of Warwick graduates who have studied with Mr. Avila have gone on to attend CEHC, and alumni of his classes speak to the care he shows for his students and his relatable teaching style. Moreover, they appreciate his ability to help them envision themselves in the career fields they were exploring.

As a former combat veteran and law enforcement officer, Mr. Avila has experience to share. He works hard with students to cultivate professionalism and prepare them for the real world expectations of the job, so they can successfully transition into these fields. He is thoughtful and effective when facilitating teachable moments with students. This coming fall, three more graduating Warwick seniors will start the CEHC program!

Congratulations, Mr. Avila!
