WVHS seniors honored at Wallkill Valley Art Invitational
Three seniors from Warwick Valley High School recently won awards in Wallkill Valley’s 10th Annual Art Invitational which was held virtually on March 26th. Artists from 14 area high schools and five middle schools submitted works of art for this show.
Maya Bialas was the winner in the Sculpture/Crafts division for a prom dress she made for herself last spring. She received a $50 gift certificate from Blick Art Materials and won a Peters Valley School of Craft scholarship.
Maya decided to make her own dress despite having never used a sewing machine before.
“I watched a lot of YouTube videos and was like: ‘Let’s make this up,’ Maya said. “I just made up a pattern, figured it out and it turned into a dress.”
Next year Maya will be attending Syracuse University for a double major in fashion design and pre-law. SU recruited her on a rowing scholarship.
Grace Hoey placed third in the painting competition with her portrait “Wrecked”. She created the acrylic painting for herself based on a photograph. Grace received a $10 gift certificate from Blick Art Materials. She plans to attend college and major in either art and entertainment management or fashion business management.
Deanna Ibbetson and her Van Gogh sculpture earned an honorable mention for the SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) scholarship.
