Wildcats Fall Sports Update (Nov. 13, 2024)
FOOTBALL
Warwick varsity football was not able overcome a slow start in the third quarter as the Wildcats were defeated by Cornwall 48-14 in the Section 9 Class A semifinals at Cornwall. The Wildcats trailed 14-7 at the half, when a Brody Frederick to Dylan Sullivan 41-yard TD strike put the Wildcats on the scoreboard and Luca Siebert’s 10th interception of the season stopped a Cornwall drive at the goal line in the second quarter.
Quarterback Brody Frederick finished the day completing 11 of 21 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. Special teams shined including a blocked punt by senior Mack Paulsen and an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Ryan Sullivan. Domenico Berlingieri punted 5 times including 3 punts inside the 20-yard line and long of 47 yards.
Senior Linebacker Grant Havell contributed 14 tackles (10 solo and four assists) from his linebacker position. Colton Senius recorded double digit tackles as well. Aidan Corbalis knocked down three passes and recorded seven tackles, he was selected Max Preps defensive player of the game for Warwick.
Warwick finishes out the season with a record of 8-2. The Athletic Awards Ceremony will be held on December 3rd beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
The Warwick girls varsity x-country team competed at the Section 9 Class A Championships on Wednesday. The team had marked its calendar for this date a long time ago, as they knew they had a legitimate shot at qualifying for the state championships in Queensbury, N.Y.
The Wildcats ran their best race of the year!
Senior captain Alyssa Dovico placed 3rd overall, with a time of 19:33 over the 3-mile course. Not far behind was junior Madison Olszewski, who narrowly missed qualifying for states by just one spot, finishing 8th overall with a time of 19:57. Trixie Wendell and Julia Schlesinger turned in solid performances to finish 12th and 13th respectively, and sophomore Juliette Cloutier finished with a personal best time of 21:58.
Ultimately, the Wildcats lost to perennial powerhouse Monroe Woodbury High School by a score of 52-53.
Alyssa Dovico will represent Warwick Valley at the state championships, and the Wildcats still have a shot at qualifying for the Federation/NXN Championships, to be held at Bowdoin Park on November 23.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
On Wednesday Nov. 6th, the boys cross country Purple Wave team travelled up to historic Bear Mountain State Park to take on the challenging 3.0-mile course around Hessian Lake in the Section 9 Class A Championship meet. The team had a great race, putting an entire season worth of training to work as they placed third out of 10 schools and bettered last year’s finish position in this meet by four places.
Freshman Leo Shostal led the squad with a fifth-place finish time of 16 minutes, four seconds. RJ Dovico was the number two man in 17:42, AJ Kobrick snagged the number three position for the Wildcats in 17:56, Jackson Spivak had the best race of his season and was the Purple Wave number four guy at 18:01. Co-captain Liam Astbury came in at 18:07 to round out the scoring. Sophomore Jake Cosco ran 18:12 and co-captain Collin Freet ran 18:21. Shostal qualified for the New York State Championships in Queensbury, N.Y., on Saturday, Nov. 16.

GIRLS SWIMMING
At the Section 9 championship meet, senior Ciara Kelly finished fourth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:19.78. She also qualified for the finals in the 100 breastroke, taking 11th in 1:14.07.
Senior diver Talia Potempa placed eighth in the championship meet with an 11-dive total of 358.55 points.
