Wildcat Spring Sports Update (April 17, 2024)

Here’s a look at some of what’s been going on this spring in Wildcat Country.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Warwick’s sophomore captain Luke Beattie finished first in four events to lead the boys track and field team in a meet against Minisink Valley on April 9. The meet was the first one held on Warwick’s new track and field complex.

Minisink Valley won the meet 74-67, despite victories by Beattie in the 100 meters (10.6 seconds), 200 meters (22.0), pole vault (16 feet) and long jump (19-2). Other highlights included eighth grader Leo Shostal taking second in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:42.2 and Nico Carrillo winning the 110 high hurdles (16.2).

The team opened the season on April 6th at the Goshen Invitational.   Beattie won the 200, and Grant Havell took third place in the hammer throw with a toss of 119-7.

BOYS LACROSSE

Warwick junior Ryan Sullivan scored his 99th and 100th career points in a 7-5 victory over Bethlehem on April 13.  Sullivan scored two goals against Bethlehem, with the eventual game-winning goal giving him his 100th career point.

Darren Vogt (three assists) and Matt Sansone also scored twice for visiting Warwick. Luke Solari had 10 saves.

Sansone and Joey Finn each scored four times and Dylan Sullivan had three goals for Warwick in a 21-13 victory over Kingston on April 10. Ryan Sullivan, Vogt and Kevin Ginley each scored twice. Solari posted 18 saves. 

SOFTBALL

Emily Romig went 2-for-3 and Olivia Martino was the winning pitcher as Warwick defeated Cornwall 6-2 on April 15. Amanda Larsen and Melina Garby each drove in two runs for the Wildcats, who improved their record to 3-2.

The Wildcats also defeated Minisink Valley 7-3 on April 9. Alyssa Sarlo went 5-for-5 with three RBI. She is batting .600 on the season. Amanda Larsen was the winning pitcher.

BASEBALL

Hunter Stuart led the way with four hits, including a home run, as the Wildcats beat Beacon 12-10 for their first victory of the season. Stuart also had two stolen bases. He leads with Warwick offense with a .650 batting average.

Mike Molinelli and Dan Yazdani each had two hits for Warwick (1-5).

GIRLS LACROSSE

Warwick, with Kelly Nevins scoring five goals, ran its record to 5-0 with a 14-8 victory over Valley Central on April 16.  Kaitlyn Larney had three goals and Ava Fanos added two for the Wildcats. Lily Mahoney made 12 saves.

Warwick defeated Pine Bush 12-7 on April 11 as Larney scored five goals. Nevins and Keira Mangels each had three goals.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Distance runners Alyssa Dovico and Trixie Wendell each finished first in an individual event and were on the winning 3,200-meter relay team as Warwick lost to Minisink Valley 91-50 in the first meet on Warwick’s new track.

Dovico won the 1,500 in 5 minutes, 14.8 seconds. Wendell was first in the 3,000. Lily Beattie won the pole vault (12-6) and was third in the 100. Erin Smith placed second in both the 100 and 200.

Beattie was first in the 200 (26.45) and pole vault (11-7) at the Goshen Invitational.

BOYS GOLF

Tyler DeSotle and Jack Boudreau each shot 43 to help Warwick defeat Valley Central 224-246 at Warwick Valley Country Club on April 16. The Wildcats are 3-0.

 GIRLS GOLF

Warwick defeated Cornwall 151-180 on April 16.

BOYS TENNIS

The Wildcats No. 1 doubles team of Owen Durgin and Evan Grundfast and the No. 2 doubles team of Connor Brogan and Jackson Micelli won third-set tiebreakers in a 6-2 loss to Goshen on April 15. Warwick swept the doubles and got a No. 3 singles win from Owen Beauregard won at No. 3 singles to pace Warwick past Minisink Valley 4-3 on April 8. 

FLAG FOOTBALL

Warwick played Middletown in a flag football game on April 10. The Middies won the game 26-7.
