Superintendent’s Spotlight: Alex Lucas

February 25, 2021

Sixth grade student Alex Lucas says he just likes helping people out, but he also gets to put his culinary interests to work at the same time he does his volunteering.

“Alex loves volunteering,” said Middle School Principal Georgianna Dipoulos. “Lately, he has been helping out the Good Shepherd Church soup kitchen with his grandmother. I know I’ve seen him at Applefest, sprinkling fried apples with cinnamon and sugar.”

Alex’s family has always recognized the enjoyment he’s gotten out of helping others, whether it was at their church, Alex’s grandmother’s church, anywhere, any time.

When Alex approached them about increasing his volunteerism, his mom and dad thought it would be great.

“I thought it would be good for me for life experience and everything,” said Alex, who enjoys the interactions with others that volunteering affords him. “It’s fun for me, and I’ve gotten more and more into it.”

Alex credits his grandmother, who he calls Óma, as being a big inspiration. It’s been with her, that he has helped prep and serve at a local free Fish Fry, which switched to a pick-up only format to accommodate as many people as possible during the pandemic.

“My Óma and I have a lot of things in common, we both love to bake and cook,” said Alex. “We were just baking cookies before the Superbowl, and last Tuesday I was peeling potatoes. We like to make chicken with broccoli, green beans – all that stuff.”

It comes as no surprise that Alex is looking forward to the subject matter and projects in Home & Careers next year in seventh grade. But, at the moment he is engrossed in some historical fiction and loving his science and history classes.

“Right now my favorite subject is Earth Science,” he said. “Social Studies has kind of levelled off right now, but Earth Science and Social Studies are definitely my favorites.”

Alex is keeping an eye out for his next volunteer opportunity, and hoping to find some activities for the spring and summer. Good luck, Alex, and great job!
