WVHS hosts speaker Michael DeLeon at Steered Straight Parent Academy tonight

Navigating the challenges of parenting can be daunting, especially when it comes to addressing critical issues like drugs, fentanyl, vaping, alcohol, bullying and suicide. On Thursday night — January 16 — Warwick Valley High School is hosting a Parent Academy with Michael DeLeon, a renowned school educator specializing in vaping and fentanyl, and founder of the non-profit educational organization Steered Straight. 

Join us this Thursday, from 6 pm to 7:30 pm, in the high school auditorium. Parents can gain a deeper understanding of these dangers and learn effective strategies to communicate with their children about these sensitive topics. Mr. DeLeon’s engaging, anecdotal presentation recounts harrowing situations from his own life as a cautionary tale for young people. His experience will help equip parents with the tools to foster open and honest conversations at home.

About Mr. DeLeon…
A successfully acclimated ex-offender who, after nearly 20 years of drug addiction, spent 12 years in state prison and half-way houses for a gang-related homicide. Michael plead guilty in a very emotional and complicated case involving the murder of his own mother by gang members tasked to kill him. Since Michael’s release from prison, he has earned three Associates Degrees, a Baccalaureate Degree in Business Management with a minor in Criminal Justice, and a CADC Educational Certificate. Michael is now in the process of obtaining his Tobacco Treatment Specialist certification from the University of Kentucky School of Nursing, his Masters Degree in Social Work at Liberty University School of Social Work as well as pursuing his LCADC. He is a published author and an award winning documentary filmmaker.
