Sanfordville hosts outstanding Valentines for Veterans event

February 20, 2024

After being “Snowed Out” on Valentine’s Day, Sanfordville Elementary School held their first Annual Valentines for Vets Celebration on Friday, February 16. Students and staff invited family and community members who are veterans to be their Valentines to thank them for their sacrifice and service.

The following distinguished guests helped SES honor our veterans: Director of Military and Veteran Affairs for Congressman Patrick Ryan’s Office Mr. Joseph N. Paone, The Village of Warwick Mayor Michael Newhard, Warwick Chief of Police John Radar, 1st Sergeant Alton Morley, SES Safety Resource Officer Katie Oresto, Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Leach and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Meghan McGourty.

The morning was hosted by the staff and students of SES, coordinated by teachers, Mrs. Carla Overbey and Mrs. Sue Havell. The guests were welcomed by the Grade 1 students waving handmade paper American Flags. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the Grade 3 Students before the welcome address was given by Principal Johnna Maraia and Associate Principal Tim Ferraro.

Dr. Leach welcomed our veterans and thanked them for their service. The veterans were treated to a continental breakfast as they listened to patriotic songs and poetry sung and recited by the Grade 4 students and their Kindergarten Buddies. Students were accompanied by Mrs. Alison Echevarria, SES music teacher.

The Grade 4 Band and Orchestra musicians performed under the direction of Mr. Ryan Muehlbauer and Mrs. Keely Blaikner. Our veterans received a sweet send-off by the Grade 2 students lining the hallways to say goodbye! All of our veterans received Valentine’s cards, crafts, and goodie bags which were designed and created by the students and staff of Sanfordville.

Sanfordville thanks the following groups and businesses for their generous donations: the Sanfordville Families and the SES PTA, Warwick Shoprite, C and D Bagels, Pine Island Bagel Store, Corwins Florist, Edenville General Store, Pine Island Parks and Recreation, Orange County Sweets, Pine Island Chamber of Commerce and the Warwick Chamber of Commerce.
Huge shout out to our incredible SES staff for planning this special day. Much appreciation to Mrs. Carla Overbey and Mrs. Suzanne Havell who organized a team of teachers and volunteers that planned, prepared and pulled-off the event. Thank you to each grade level for their crafts and contributing in their own way. Thank you to the office and custodial staff for their assistance.

Thank you to the PTA and all of the Sanfordville families for donating supplies and treats. Thank you to our SES Leadership Club, and their Advisors Mrs. DeGuisto and Ms. Hughes for their video and slideshow presentation, to our High School FFA Club and their Advisor Mrs. Colgan. and to the High School Criminal Justice students and their teacher Mr. Ed Avila. A wonderful time was had by all and we look forward to next year!
