PIE students market to peers in Sanfordville lemonade war

June 6, 2023

At Sanfordville, PIE 3/4 classes read the novel, The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies. In the novel, characters Evan and Jessie launch an “all-out war” in the final days of summer vacation to see who can sell the most lemonade before school starts!

The Lemonade War was part of a PIE model book club, and as a culminating project the students took part in a “Lemonade War” of their own. Students worked in groups to set up lemonade stands in PIE Garden. They began by creating a business plan for their stand (including setting a price per cup based on materials and rent), deciding how to make their stands stand out from the others, and putting together catchy advertising campaigns.

Thank you to the PIE parents who joined us in class to share their business and advertising expertise!

There were two goals:

  1. Win “favorite lemonade” as voted by their K through 2 PIE peers, and…
  2. See which stand made the most profit.

The lemonade challenge tied together multiple study areas that the PIE students have touched on, including book study, a unit on decimals and money, and a unit on graphing (the students graphed all votes received). The novel talks about added value, competition, joint ventures, promotions, location, good will, and more.

Everyone had a great time!
