Park Avenue third graders learn to play the recorder

February 5, 2024

For Park Avenue Elementary School third graders, this is the most exciting time of the year in music class because students are beginning to learn the recorder. The recorder is the first instrument that students begin playing in the WVCSD music program.

“I always look forward to this day every year,” Park Avenue music teacher Ms. Chester said. “Getting to see the joy on the students’ faces when they receive their recorder is very exciting for me!”

Students will learn how to care for and maintain the recorder in addition to playing it. At this point, third graders are learning the proper way to hold and make a sound on the recorder as well as the first three notes: B, A, and G. These three notes will lead  into learning the first full song, “Hot Cross Buns.” Soon students will have the ability to learn new songs and earn different colored recorder karate belts to add to their recorder cases.

“All of the third grade classes have been doing a great job so far and are eager to keep learning.” Ms. Chester said.
