October 16-20 is School Board Recognition Week

October 17, 2023

From October 16th to the 20th, we come together to observe School Board Recognition Week, a time dedicated to expressing our deep appreciation for the dedicated individuals who serve on the Warwick Valley Central Schools Board of Education. Let’s pause for a moment to recognize and applaud their invaluable contributions: President Keith Parsons, Vice President Dory Masefield, Sharon Davis, William Fanos, John Garcia, Robert Howe, Lynn Lillian, Daniel Mahoney, and Thomas Maslanka.

Governor Kathy Hochul has officially declared October 16th to 20th as School Board Recognition Week in New York. This proclamation stands as a testament to the commitment of school board members to the well-being of New York’s children. The board of education is a uniquely American institution, essential for ensuring that our public schools remain adaptable and responsive to the specific needs of their local communities. Serving on a board of education in New York State is a distinguished honor, as it entails one of the most significant responsibilities any citizen can shoulder: shaping the education of our community’s youth.

School board members shoulder one of the most vital civic responsibilities, overseeing the education of the community’s youth. They serve as the guiding force behind their local school systems, ensuring that public schools remain flexible and attuned to the needs of the community. School board members are volunteers, the majority of whom do not receive any compensation for their service. They are dedicated individuals from the community who generously offer their time to enhance public education.

With a primary focus on the well-being of our schoolchildren, school board members:

  • Craft a shared vision for the future of education
  • Set the course for the school district to achieve the highest levels of student performance
  • Ensure accountability for student achievement outcomes
  • Develop and present a budget to the community
  • Align district resources to enhance academic achievement
  • Foster a healthy school district culture for both learning and work
  • And undertake many other essential tasks.

The Warwick Valley Central School District proudly joins hands with public school districts throughout the state in acknowledging the commitment of our local board members to the Warwick community and the future of our children. As we observe School Board Recognition Week, let us not only pay tribute to these dedicated individuals but also redouble our efforts to guarantee that the students in Warwick receive the highest quality education possible.
