RTI Model
Response to Intervention is the practice of providing high-quality instruction/intervention. This instruction begins in the general education classroom and may be provided by a variety of school personnel. The students’ progress is closely monitored to assess their learning rate and level of performance.
The principles of RtI are:
- Quality, research-based instruction
- At least one screening a year for all students
- Instruction matched to student needs
- Progress monitoring to assess student progress toward meeting goals
- Data driven decision making
- Parent notification
The RtI Plan is a work in progress and will continue to be closely reviewed throughout the school year.
RTI Tier 1, 2 and 3
What is Tier 1?
Interventions are universal and available to all students.
All new entrants will take part in universal screenings in reading and math. All other students are evaluated using many of our instructional technology tools as well as teachers looking at historical data. We believe in multiple sources of data so that we can get a broader view of each student.
What is Tier 2 “IN”? (demonstrated through at least three sources of data)
- Interventions are targeted and delivered by the classroom teacher in the classroom for 4-6 weeks
- Students who have been identified by Data Analysis Team (DAT) as demonstrated through multiple measures
- Students who have been identified by the classroom teacher as struggling in the classroom/failing report card
- Students who performed below the “cut score” on the NYS Assessment
What is Tier 2 “OUT?”
- Students identified by DAT using at least 3 forms of data
- DAT will meet approximately every 6- 8 weeks to review all Tier 2 OUT and Tier 2 IN students identified by the classroom teacher as now making adequate progress
- Interventions are targeted and delivered outside the classroom by a reading or math specialist for two consecutive trials of 4-6 weeks
- Classroom Teacher continues to provide interventions
- There should be a definitive end of services and the services should be targeted to a very specific weakness
Communication between classroom teacher and service provider is imperative- DAT along with the classroom teacher and service provider will refer a student who has not responded to Tier 2 OUT interventions to the Problem Solving Team (PST)
- Students who performed below the “cut score” on the NYS Assessment
What is Tier 3?
- Students who are not responding to interventions provided through Tier 2 OUT services. The PST recognizes that the student has demonstrated the need, through multiple measures, for more intensive and lengthy intervention and the skill remains targeted
- Resources as indicated on pyramid include: Lexia, IRLA, Orton Gillingham, My Sidewalks
- The duration of most Tier 3 interventions is 6-9 weeks with the exception of My Sidewalks which may require a full year program
