Community Message re: Solar Eclipse on April 8
Dear Warwick Valley CSD Families,
On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will occur, visible in northern New York State. This rare phenomenon will manifest as a partial eclipse in our area. I’m reaching out to discuss the exciting educational opportunities and safety precautions associated with this eclipse, particularly regarding its timing. We’ve thoroughly reviewed both aspects and are eager to share our plans to help you prepare accordingly.
We believe this is a significant learning opportunity – with the proper safety precautions – for our students. Teachers are preparing lessons and gatherings that will integrate this real-world learning. Please watch your email in the coming week for further correspondence from your child’s principal.
For our region, the moon will not completely block the sun’s light, creating a partial eclipse. The eclipse will start at 2:10 p.m., peak at 3:25 p.m. with 92.5% of the sun obscured by the moon, and then end at 4:36 p.m. Admittedly, the optimal peak of viewing will happen just before regular dismissal for the elementary schools and after school for high school and middle school students. The District has purchased NASA-approved safety glasses for all students, teachers, and staff and everyone will be encouraged to wear them while viewing the eclipse.
If any parents wish to have their child(ren) dismissed from school to observe this unique solar event together, we fully understand and will excuse the absence. Kindly inform your child’s school following standard attendance procedures as soon as possible.
