WVHS freshmen learn about Student Government

Members of the freshmen class at Warwick Valley High School who may be interested in becoming part of Student Government met last week to learn more about what student governance entails at the high school level.

This week, students who have decided to pursue class offices will sign up for the roles they hope to serve as class representatives to Student Government, including President, Vice President, and Secretary. The class will vote to see who ultimately gets the role.

Student Government encourages and supports the development of leadership skills by providing students with a platform to take initiative when it comes to student governance. The vote for student officers is a first step.

“You’re representing your class and your school,” said Jill Martinez who is one of the advisors for Student Government. “Even though you are a freshman, you want to start preparing and you want to start building your resume for colleges because they look for that type of leadership.”

One of the early responsibilities of the freshmen class officers is leading their class’ homecoming preparations. Homecoming is a Warwick Valley tradition with deep roots, that connects school and community in unique ways, including the annual homecoming parade down Main Street. The students at the meeting also learned about the events that comprise homecoming, and how they would be able to get involved. A perennial student favorite is taking part in building the freshman class float. The homecoming parade is coming up on September 21.

“During the next few weeks, the freshmen class will be working to establish class officers to represent their class and will be working towards the creation of the freshmen float for the homecoming parade,” said Danielle Bugasch, another advisor for Student Government.
