WVMS students defeat staff 14-13 in annual kickball game
The student team scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning and then held on to defeat the staff team 14-13 in the fourth annual Warwick Valley Middle School Students vs. Staff Kickball Game! The students have now won two games in a row after the teachers were victorious in the first two years.
The student team was the Mighty Ducks, who earned the right to play the teachers after winning the eighth grade kickball tournament. The Ducks got off to a good start, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. But the teacher tied the score in the bottom half, thanks to long home runs by Mr. Botta and Mr. Garcia.
Mr. Botta and Mr. Garcia also hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning to help the teachers take a 9-6 lead. The Mighty Ducks then scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to go in front 11-10 and added three more in the seventh inning to take what looked like a comfortable 14-10 lead.
The WVMS staff, however, rallied for three runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh before their comeback came up one run short. After the game, the Mighty Ducks celebrated with some of their classmates and then received the trophy at home plate.
