Sanfordville students’ work included in NYS Martin Luther King Jr. exhibit
As we enter Black History Month, we are proud to share that seven Sanfordville Elementary School students in Sunwha Gil’s art class had their work accepted into the 2025 NYS Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Art & Essay Exhibition! The exhibition is an annual event by the New York State Education Department, which honors the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by inviting schools to submit original student artwork and essays that reflect Dr. King’s Six Principles & Steps of Nonviolence.
The project was one of many lessons at Sanfordville around Martin Luther King Day, celebrating Dr. King’s life and legacy. As part of their art lesson, Ms. Gil’s third grade students reflected on the six principles, which are:
- Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people.
- Nonviolence seeks to win friendship and understanding.
- Nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice, not people.
- Nonviolence holds that voluntary suffering can educate and transform.
- Nonviolence chooses love instead of hate.
- Nonviolence believes that the universe is on the side of justice.
“My third grade students visually expressed Dr. King’s message of peace by using doves as symbols,” said Ms. Gil. “Please join me in congratulating them on their achievement!”
We are happy to share the pictures with you here as well.
