More Wildcat homecoming memories from alumni-turned-faculty at Park & Sanfordville

Homecoming spirit is in full swing throughout WVCSD! Today we have more Wildcat Memories, with three alumni-turned-faculty at Park Avenue and Sanfordville Elementary School sharing what makes (and made) homecoming so special for them.

Ms. Weller today.

Carolyn Weller (Class of 2015) teaches at Park Avenue. Ms. Weller talked about the homecoming activities she enjoyed most during her time in school, including being part of her class’s float building teams and the other Spirit Week activities that lead up to the Saturday events.

“When we were seniors, our theme was Steven Spielberg movies,” Ms. Weller said. “Each of the grades had a different movie; we had Jurassic Park. It was really cool to see how everything came together and how the different grades collaborated on the floats and decorations.”

“In my sophomore year, my class had Pixar Movies,” she said. “I remember we did the movie Monsters, Inc., so we stayed after school to decorate, and we drew this giant Sully and hung it up in the hallway.”

These moments from the past are representative of the special time of year in Warwick that every student still gets to experience today. Ms. Weller feels that hosting homecoming at the beginning of the year is exciting because it brings everyone together.

“It’s always been a good way to get to know people, even if you grew up with them,” she shared. “It was also great to make new friends and create those memories.”

Jenny Augelli (Class of 19914) is a teacher at Sanfordville, and she agreed.

“I mostly remember making the floats. It was such a social time for everyone, and really brought everybody together,” said Ms. Augeli. “Even those who were not athletes. Artists came in and so many different groups of kids joined.”

Ms. Augelli also reflected on the excitement of being nominated as a homecoming princess in her senior year.

“It was such a special moment,” Ms. Augelli said. “My cousin and I were two of the homecoming princesses that year, which was really cool because we were in the same year.”

Ms. Augelli said that what makes homecoming so special for everyone in the school and the community is that it’s a chance to represent the district and show the community what Warwick is all about.

“Of course, homecoming is mainly about football, but it didn’t feel that way because everyone got a chance to be a part of it,” she said. “It was a great experience and a great feeling, being able to represent your sport and your class.”

Ms. Caswell today.

Katie Caswell (Class of 1998) also teaches at Sanfordville. She got to experience homecoming from the perspective of a cheerleader. She spent homecoming on the field!

“When we were on the field, it was so exciting to see all the purple and gold in the stands,” Ms. Caswell said. “I have a lot of great memories of that time, and the experience of homecoming is unmatched because everyone is in such good spirits.”

“My favorite part was the parade,” she continued. “I remember driving through town and throwing candy out to the little kids. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, so seeing all those kids looking up to you, knowing that they could grow up and be a cheerleader or whatever they wanted to be was so exciting.”
