Elementary schools celebrate PAWS and ROAR successes

December 10, 2024

Students at both Park Avenue and Sanfordville Elementary Schools celebrated themselves recently for modelling excellent in-school behavior throughout the first trimester of the year! At Park Avenue it was a ROAR celebration; at Sanfordville, a PAWS celebration. Administration, faculty and students gathered to recognize their great work in the area of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports… PBIS.

What’s PBIS?
It’s is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. PBIS teaches students about the behavioral expectations on them while in the school and on school grounds, and offers strategies they can apply to meet those expectations. It is a proactive approach that aims to preempt behavioral problems rather than rely on a punitive model. PBIS creates a positive and supportive learning environment that benefits everyone in the school community, as evidenced by improved academic outcomes in PBIS schools.

At Park Avenue, students learn about PBIS expectations through the ROAR program. ROAR stands for…

  • Respect
  • Outstanding choices
  • Acceptance
  • Responsibility

At Sanfordville, the PBIS program is called PAWS, which stands for…

  • Polite
  • Accountable
  • Wise (choices)
  • Safety (first)

To celebrate and reinforce the ROAR attributes that students have been practicing since September, Park Avenue students were treated to an interactive assembly called Super Me, performed by an educational troupe called The Story Ship. The show focused on kindness, self-esteem, and bullying prevention.

Students at Sanfordville enjoyed a Wacky Science Show sponsored by the SES PTA. Audience participation was high again, as the hands-on science-experiment-turned-comedy-skit unfolded. It was a fun way to celebrate and reinforce the polite, accountable, wise and safe choices that the students have been making so far this year.
