Middle
school students perform
songs for troops
Wed., Dec. 16, 2009
Following the spirited tradition of USO performers who have been brightening the holidays for lonely GIs since the 1940s, 1,700 music students from 11 New York schools put on a festive holiday concert for overseas troops broadcast live via the Intranet Wed., Dec. 16.
For the third consecutive year, Warwick Valley Middle School students participated in the "virtual" concert for U.S. troops who will be away from their own children and families for the holidays. Local Reservist LT. Col. Ed Lynch said this year's concert was broadcast to troops in Northern Africa and Pakistan.
The Warwick Valley Middle School Chamber Orchestra performed "Smoke on the Water," the Chamber Choir performed “Don’t Stop Believing,” the 8th Grade Jazz Band performed “At the Hop,” and all groups sang “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”
The special holiday concert was organized by former Warwick
Middle School Assistant Principal and current Chester Middle
School Principal, Ernest Jackson, a retired Army lieutenant
colonel.
